One that is so full of imagery that you feel that it was definitely sent to you as a message? I have a lot of dreams and many of them are memorable for some reason or another but nothing like the goose dream I had in February. It stuck with me and I could not stop thinking about it. Geese seemed to show up constantly as a reminder of the disturbing and apocolyptic dream.

With art, you should be moved to feel. I am not interested in buying or making art that coordinates with my living room but is devoid of emotion. I want to feel a physical reaction to it- good or bad. For me, I think I achieved that in this piece. Someone else could look at it and see something different or nothing at all. But when I look at that piece, it says what I wanted it to say and I feel the way that I felt when I woke up that morning in February.
Im always fascinated by the process an artist goes through when they make their art. I know that for some people it starts with a color, for some a shape. For me, it is always the narrative. New meanings are uncovered and healing takes place. Healing through communication, the process of creation and the reconciliation of the feelings themselves. So whether it's happy art or darker art, they all serve the same purpose; exploration and understanding.
This weekly project stretched a bit longer than one year. Between the usual chaos of the holidays, selling the shop, and then the impact of covid-19, there were a lot of things that kept me from a strict timeline. But I am happy to say that I stuck with it regardless of the 14 months that it took me to complete my 52 Weeks of Play. As a serious type A personality, I can be rigid in my discipline. I am thankful for that in so many ways; I have been able to achieve many of my dreams and feel more comfortable in the structure of my routine. But there are times when forcing discipline and commitment are not the best way to go. The standards and expectations I put on myself have always been far greater than the ones put on me.

Learning to have some grace with myself has been a conscious effort. Slowing down I have begun to notice the subtleties of the leaves as the wind knocks outside of my window, the quantity of Cardinals in my own backyard and the gift of stopping in the middle of the day to just go for a walk. I hope to take that lesson into the future and remember to slow down even as life becomes more full again with places to go and things to do.

Week 49: Garment Sewing

I purchased this beautiful fabric in NYC months ago and it was just waiting to be something fabulous but I wasn't sure quite what. I kept imagining a coat with a crazy faux fur collar and a leopard lining a la Versace pattern mixing style. I decided to make a long structured vest so I hacked a pattern and added a lining. I love how it turned out!

Week 50: Silkscreen

Silkscreen can be intimidating to people because it seems like you need a lot of fancy supplies. That is simply not true! There are many easy ways to make a DIY silkscreen! I used contact paper and organza with some acrylic paint. An old gift card made a great squeegee and that was it!

I have been working on a quilt that was inspired by a very vivid dream I had in February about a flock of geese. Since then, geese have been showing up in my sketchbook and I can't stop thinking about them. The geese silkscreens were cut out and will be stitched into a larger piece that I am working on.

Week 51: Dyeing with Kool Aid and Rit Dye

I have dyed fabrics in many different ways. As much as I enjoy it, the preciseness of measuring powders and chemicals to get the finished product tends to keep me from doing a lot of it. Since I work with smaller pieces of fabric and do not need to replicate my results from dye bath to dye bath, I am always looking for alternative ways to add color. This week I played with Kool Aid and Liquid Rit Dye. Both are found at the grocery store and easy to use.

Week 52: Painted Coffee Filters

I love working in layers...collage, lace fabrics, encaustic... so I started playing around with coffee filter art. This was so fun! And you cant get much cheaper than a coffee filter! After I created my art, I cut out the image and added it to my art journal.

Now that my 52 Weeks of Play are over I am going to continue in this direction. Taking time to focus on process over project has been fun and informative! It has helped me add new techniques to my art toolbox that I am excited to incorporate into more of my art. Follow along on instagram @the_meditative_stitcher
I am not sure on why that is but I wonder if it is a combination of the overwhelm of finally having so much time to create that it makes it hard to choose or if it is the anxiety and worries of current events. My guess is that it's a combination of the two. I have so many ideas and so many things I have always wanted to work on that my focus level is just not there. Rather than work on my quilted art pieces which tend to involve an emotional concept with many weeks or months of work and decision making involved, I find myself unable to make the commitment. I am craving creative projects that require me to follow directions (like garment sewing or a knitting project) or that allow me full on creative play (like making a mess for the pure joy of creating).

Week 45: Log Cabin Quilt Block

Even though I consider myself a quilter, I pretty much never make traditional quilt blocks. I love the look of them and even made a few traditionally patterned quilts back in the late 90s but I have no desire to make them now. When I decided that my boring knitting bag needed some fun fabric patches, I found one of my favorite bird fabric remnants from designer, Anna Maria Horner. I decided to feature it in a log cabin quilt block.

Week 46: Crochet Cast on

Well- this is a stretch...it didn't feel like "play" but it was learning something new! I tried out a sweater pattern that called for a crochet cast on. After two evenings of struggle, I was up and running! The rest of this sweater flew by and I made it in record breaking (for me) time!
Week 47: Eco Dyed Paper

Another casualty of COVID was my monthly newspaper column, Crafting Into Calm. It's unfortunate because I feel like now more than ever this column could help people. Also unfortuate, I had submitted my April article before I knew that the freelance writers were cut. I completely understand and support this but I wanted to share the project with you! Using items in your own backyard, I created a wall hanging featuring paper that was dyed with petals and leaves. If anyone is interested in the full DIY article, let me know and I would be happy to publish it here.

Well this was a fun one! I spent Saturday afternoon completely engrossed in play. I am realizing that my hands and plans often cant keep up with my creative energy. For awhile now I have been looking at ways to best connect my love of adding hand stitch and texture with my abstract paintings and collage. I still havent nailed the process I am looking for but I think I am getting closer.
Not only have I sold my business which is a huge personal transition, but we as an entire human race are facing a major challenge. Like everyone else, I am just trying to grasp onto everything and anything that helps to bring about comfort at a time like this. And for me, that is art.

Week 41: Drawing

I never have felt confident in my drawing skills so I treated myself to a new sketchbook and have committed to starting a drawing practice. I would love to be able to incorporate more of my own imagery into my quilts. You can't get better without practice!

Week 42: Couching Stitch

I used this week to put the finishing touches on my latest quilt. I always liked the look of couching but never really used it much in my own pieces. I really wanted the figure to stand out against the background so I used the couching method of embroidery to outline the figure. As you can tell from the finished piece, this was created during the turbulence of the last several months and finished as the news of the pandemic was growing.
Week 43: Monoprints

By this second or third week of social distancing, I turned to some fun online art classes! There are so many wonderful free resources out there for people to learn new techniques. One of my absolute favorite artists is Laura Kemshall. Besides her paid online classes, there are many free ones to choose from. I took her monoprinting class and got some terrific results! Here is a link!

Week 44: Paper Stencils

What I have found to be the most comforting during this time of global crisis is the notion of "play". Having an escape from the news to get into a meditative state of creating where you can just make a mess without any pressure. There are so many ways of doing this. For this past week, I used basic office supplies of cardstock, paperpunches and an exacto knife to make some easy paper stencils.

I encourage everyone to pull out their art supplies- even if that means crayons and coloring books. Having a creative outlet can take you out of yourself and allow you a few minutes (or more!) of peace.Whitneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10359979154558017101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683542432320817648.post-47394440167427951402020-02-13T11:04:00.001-08:002020-02-13T11:04:18.118-08:0052 Weeks of Play: Weeks 37-40These rainy days bring out my inspiration! I have noticed a theme with my play activities lately. They involve a lot of quiet meditative stitching. Nothing beats curling up in a blanket with cloth and a needle and thread. Not all of the play has been stitching but even when my week focused on collage or embossed paper, there has been stitching in the form of knitting. This handwork has gotten me through some of my most difficult times in my life and I honestly do not know where I would be without it.

Week 37: Collage

More art journal play! I was fortunate to take an all day New Year's workshop with Courtney Prahl. The perfect day of losing one's self in making through introspection, play and reflection.
Week 38: Sashiko

The Japanese form of decorative reinforcement stitching (functional embroidery), traditionally used to reinforce or repair called Sashiko has been getting a lot of buzz these days. As people become more aware of the origin of their fast fashion clothing, many people are choosing to take up Sashiko to mend their well loved clothing as opposed to tossing them into a landfill. Besides fulfilling a practical need, the stitch also adds a handmade touch of beauty to the item.

Week 39: Embossing

I just love embossing powder. I created paper mosaic hearts using gold embossing powder. Watching the dull dirty brown powder turn into gilded gold is magical.

Week 40: Slow Stitching

There is something about the up down motion through the cloth that just soothes me. And this particular nubby textured fabric is really speaking to my heart. For this week of play, this was exactly what my soul needed.
When I really needed it the most I was unable to make time to play. The holidays can be stressful and time consuming but it shows me year after year what I know to be true. I am not my best when I do not make time for exercise and art. Those two things along with daily meditation and eating healthy are essential components for my happiness. While I kept up with my daily meditation, the rest really fell by the wayside. And I paid for it. Dearly. But it is over and I am so glad to get back to my normal routine and healthy habits. Here are weeks 33-36 with a two week hiatus between 35 & 36!

Week 33: Glue Gun Stencils

I have always wanted to give this a try and was excited to make some stencils for mono printing using my glue gun! They were fun to make and I especially enjoyed using it with handwriting.

Week 34: Monoprints with Glue Gun Stencils

This was a craft FAIL! Maybe with more practice this would have worked out better but I did not have great results. I realized however how cool the stencils were once they had paint on them. The realization opened up new ideas for ways to use the stencils since they were 3D and also pliable.

Week 35: Color Patterned Knitting

You guys, I made a dino scarf! And it is reversible! I'm actually pretty proud of this project which was a Christmas gift for my nephew. It was my first time following a knitting chart and using 2 colors to make a design. I have been told that my nephew won't take it off. Now that is a knit worthy person!

Week 36: Book Making

Since it is a new year and I love to journal, I thought it would be fun to make my own! I used the paper fabric I made in Week 30 as the cover and created random pages to inspire some fun writing prompts. You can learn how to make your own in my upcoming Crafting Into Calm project in the Frederick News Post.

Week 29: Meditative Stitching

Last month I was able to get away for a few days with my husband to Chincoteague VA. I am fortunate to be able to do this a few times a year but I especially love going there in the off-season. Nothing beats the quiet morning view. Meditative stitching is the perfect activity for when you are on a trip. With your daily demands at home, vacation allows you to focus on what is most important. Slow stitching keeps your intentions on what you are creating. I stitched my gratitude for the quiet mornings.

Week 30: Paper Fabric

It has been a long time since I made paper fabric and I was anxious to take a week of play to try it again! Basically you create a thinned down glue and use it to adhere light weight papers such as tissue and napkin layers to fabric. You can basically create your own designed fabric!

Week 31: Reversible Knitting

Because I have to be the BEST aunt ever, when my 6 year old nephew asked me to knit him a scarf, I could not possibly say no! And could I just make a scarf? Of course not, I had to make a super cool reversible color worked dinosaur scarf! So I had to learn how to do reversible knitting. Stay tuned for the color work which will eventually be a future week of play!

Week 32: Shibori

One of my favorite weeks of play! I love Shibori so much and was excited to host Margaret Hluch's Shibori Workshop yesterday. We spent six hours practicing the various techniques of this Japanese thread resist. I love the pieces I left with!

This week I enjoyed taking a class with Martina Sestakova where we did watercolor collages. It inspired me and when I got home I played around a little more and even added some water soluable crayons and doodles to the watercolors.
Week 26: Mosaics

Mosaics are always so appealing. You can really add anything you want to a mosaic and it will just make it look even better! The flow of just picking and placing without much forethought to the outcome is very freeing.

Week 27: Doodles

Back to my art journal again! I used my time this week to take the most basic supply- a black sharpie marker to just doodle. I used the silkscreen print that was on a ribbon I had glued on the page as inspiration. I simply embellished the shapes with a gold sharpie marker. It just goes to show- you don't need anything special to have a quick art date with yourself and the happiness it brings you is immeasurable!

Week 28: Refashioning

The powerful documentary, The True Cost, shows the very dark side of the fashion industry and the true cost of fast fashion. Since seeing this film, I have been even more conscious of my part in all of this. I have made an effort to make more intentional purchases and buy less. I have been adding to my handmade wardrobe instead. In addition, I have looked hard at pieces that I own to see if there were ways to make them into pieces that I will wear more. I turned an extra denim jacket that was just hanging in my closet unworn into a more fun jacket that I am enjoying wearing.

I also finished this piece, Listen, over the past few weeks.

You might recognize some of the elements from past "play" weeks (reverse applique, embroidery and painted fabric) This is what I love about this challenge of experimentation- it just opens up a larger tool box to choose from!

I participate in an annual charity art event every year at The Muse where I create for a good cause. This year the money raised will go to The Buddy Project, an organization that includes Autism advocacy and awareness. I did a collage that included painting and some of my water soluable sewing.

Week 22: Papermaking

My good friend Courtney Prahl invited me into the studio to try papermaking! We made bookmarks for our charity event, Lend a Hand. It has always been something I wanted to try and it was fun to try it out with a friend.

Week 23: Magnets

Using scraps from some old paintings that I had done, I made magnets! I had a lot of old abstract paintings that I had done that I didn't like as a whole but liked parts of them. Turning them into magnets made them useful and mini art pieces.

Week 24: Rust Dyeing

Everytime I see a rusty object on the ground, I pick it up. I have been collecting rusty pieces to do rust dyeing for a long time. I finally gave it a try and really liked the results. Like with every new technique, I will know better for the next time how to get more of the effects that I am looking for.

Inspired by the work of Ines Seidel, I wanted to try out her technique of stitching paper and removing pieces. Since I love to work in layers, I think I will find a way to incorporate this in my own style for future projects.

Week 18: Tag Art

I made these for my DIY column in the newspaper. It was really fun because you are limited with space and you can quickly complete a mini piece of art all on its own. There is something about the low risk factor of mini art that allows for play.
Week 19: Lace Knitting

On vacation I had lots of time to knit in a beautiful setting! While I have done some easy lace knitting before, this pattern was much more challenging. I feel really good that I was able to get through it!
Week 20: Reverse Applique

I created a textured "stone layer" in week 15 for a larger piece of art I am working on. This week I layered it under my quilt and cut away the top fabric to reveal the stone layer using a method called reverse applique. Cutting into the piece was a bit scary because I was afraid to ruin it but I like the way it turned out.
I had a lot of fun the last several weeks and have some ideas of new things I want to tackle in the next few weeks of play.Whitneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10359979154558017101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683542432320817648.post-60673774746522323272019-07-23T18:34:00.001-07:002019-07-23T18:34:46.745-07:0052 Weeks of Play: Weeks 13-16

There has been a wide variety of Play happening these past four weeks, Some was work play (like the glue batik that I did for my monthly column), some was for a social activism project and then there was play for my own personal fun. Regardless of the reason, I enjoyed all of it!

Week 13: Glue Batik

I have always wanted to try this technique! I definitely would do a few things differently the next time I do it, like using wider lines of glue but I thought it was fun and I liked the results!

Week 14: Craftivism

I have always loved using craft in creative ways to make a difference. In my own art, I believe that I am always driven to create art that expresses a social statement...sometimes that statement is a personal one and sometimes it is on a macro scale. Several months ago I heard about the Tiny Pricks Project and knew I needed to participate. It gave me a tactile way of dealing with things that are going on in our country in my own way. If you are curious about this project, you can find more information about it here.
Week 15: Painting Over a Quilted Surface

Linda and Laura Kemshall are two quilt artists who I have always admired. In their book, The Painted Quilt, they show how to add color and dimension to quilted fabric. I wanted to give it a try. First I quilted the fabric and then used a brayer to roll paint over the top. I was going for a cobblestone look and I am really pleased with the results!

These last few weeks have been filled with play. After the project focused week 9, I got more into the flow of creation for the last three weeks. Allowing myself this time has been so good for my soul. More reminders that it is process over project that allow for the healing effects of art to come through.

Week 9: Garment Sewing

Okay, this week was more about the project. Even though it was not hard to make, it wasn't really play. I have to admit though, I sure do like the outcome!
Week 10: Natural Dyeing

Margaret Hluch led an all day long Natural Dye workshop through The Muse. This whole day was amazing. I got lost in the process without attachment to the outcome. We played with clamping, shibori and painting. You can see more about the class on the Muse website, here.
Week 11: Applique

I really love applique. This was definitely something I wanted to play with during my 52 weeks. There is something so relaxing about using the needle to turn under the edges and find that sweet spot pocket to glide your needle through.....
Week 12: Gelatos on Fabric

Artist and friend, Colleen Attara introduced me to Faber Castell Gelatos in an art journal class that I took with her. I was hooked immediately and ordered a starter set that very night. Fast forward three years, I now have the large set and have found so many uses for them including painting them on fabric.

Besides my "play" projects, I have also spent more time knitting. I try to find at least a little time in almost every day to do some knitting. I crave the relaxing rhythm of the stitch and the click of the needles. I can feel it in myself that this creative time has been so restorative. Art is definitely my happy place.Whitneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10359979154558017101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683542432320817648.post-5078683374207869012019-05-30T17:25:00.000-07:002019-05-30T17:25:00.552-07:0052 Weeks of Play: Weeks 5-8Week 5: Continental Knitting

Knitting has become a major passion of mine in the last two years. My dear friend Laura taught me and I am obsessed! The problem is, I want to knit ALL of the things but my pace is not helping me with this goal. Obviously I have so many passions that it is hard to find enough time for all of them which is part of the problem but I'm also a slow knitter! On one hand, I don't mind being slow because I really do enjoy the rhythm of the stitch, however, I wanted to give continental knitting a try because it is supposed to be a faster way of knitting.

On a recent bus ride to NYC, I brought a practice project and some yarn and spent the entire ride practicing the continental style of knitting. I feel like I got a good handle on it however I know that my gauge was loose. I did enjoy the change and it was fun but I think for now I will keep with my slow but steady predictable pace of regular English style knitting.
Week 7: Art Journal

Nothing gets you into a state of flow faster than art journaling. I turn off my brain, grab whatever strikes me and put it in my journal. Later I look at it and add to it with collage, stamping or words. I just keep going until I get something I love. Pure art therapy right there.

Week 8: Decoupage

I remember my mom crafting back in the very early 80s. Two things that really stick out in my memory are woodburned keyrings and napkin decoupage. Specifically, she used beautiful napkins to embellish candles and create decorative soaps. I remember being fascinated by how the airy top layer of the napkin just soaked into whatever it was adhered to. I tried the same technique on a glass vase.

If I am being totally honest in my reflection of the last four weeks, I feel like a lot of my "play" was project based. Its hard to turn off my never ending list of projects that I want to try to make. Even thinking ahead to various weeks, I feel like I am trying to incorporate this project into something on my project to-do list. Currently I am in week 9 and I am doing garment sewing. It does not feel as much like play to me. The art journal was pure play...it was the most rewarding and the most therapeutic to my soul. Going forward I am going to try to do more of that and worry less about completing projects....even if that just means my result is a little sample. Its hard to fight our own nature! It's hard to resist the urge to multitask or check a box off the to-do list but that is exactly why I chose this challenge. I want to explore and play!Whitneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10359979154558017101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683542432320817648.post-23056565255823292002019-05-09T15:58:00.001-07:002019-05-09T15:58:18.309-07:0052 Weeks of Play: Weeks 1-4Week 1: Water Soluable Fabric

I have always been curious about water soluable fabric after seeing the work of Amanda McCavour. Amanda creates environments with her thread painted installations that are breathtaking and all encompassing. See her work here. I have tried the technique in the past with no success but I decided to give it another try! By experimenting, I learned some tricks and was happy with the results! I think I will come back to this again in the future!
Week 2: Freestyle Embroidery

Since I was working on a piece for a collaboration project that had a deadline, I decided to incorporate my "play" into my piece. I used embroidery to free draw flowers into the piece. The flowers were not pre-drawn so I just trusted my stitches.
Week 3: Abstract Painting

I am definitely not a painter but I love working with painted backgrounds. I have been playing with abstract painting to create some interesting bases for collage and stitch. Some have turned out better than others, these are a few of my favorites so far...

Week 4: Gel Plate Image Transfers

I love playing with Gelli Plates to make monoprints but I had recently seen artists using their plate to create image transfers! I decided to try it out for myself. While I had some success with it, I think it will take more experimenting. There are a lot of factors which can affect the outcome such as the best image to use, the amount of paint on your plate, rubbing pressure and the surface you are transferring to. Since I like to work with fabric, I was trying various fabrics and all of the artists I had seen use this technique were working with paper.
It has been a fun first few weeks but I need to remind myself that the goal is play. The goal is not finished results. Since my last year long challenge was all about creating a finished piece each week, I need to remember that the focus this year is process. To try new things, to explore things more fully. My true reward from this year is hopefully adding new skills to my arsenal to pull from when a piece I am working on needs it.Whitneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10359979154558017101noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683542432320817648.post-35162319797481014822019-04-01T18:41:00.002-07:002019-04-01T18:41:27.908-07:0052 Weeks of Play
It has been over a year since I completed my 52 Collage Project. After I finished up with the year-long challenge, I thought about starting another challenge for myself but I needed to take a break. Not very long into last year, I realized I missed it. I missed the self imposed discipline of a weekly challenge. I started to dream up new challenge ideas...

Coming up with new year-long challenges were not hard for me. My creative brain mixed with my regimented habit personality loved this kind of brainstorm! I had a whole list of ideas to choose from but the holidays came and I got tired. And my new challenge idea fell by the wayside. Anyone in retail can especially identify with the pure exhaustion that comes with the end of the year. Heck, anyone who isnt even in retail can identify!

Due to my "Upholder" personality, (a personality type coined by Gretchen Rubin's 4 Tendencies Personality Types of which I am 100% a perfect match for), I had a hard time starting a year long challenge when it was not January 1st. I'm such a creature of habit that I felt that I needed to wait until New Year's to start a year-long challenge. I've decided I am going to go against my nature and start one now. Last week's blog post on the importance on art without expectation reminded me of a challenge idea that had been brewing in my mind since my project brainstorming session.

52 weeks of play. A year of play. For the next 52 weeks, I will create art for the sake of PLAY. Unlike my last project where I ended up with 52 completed compositions, this time I will not end up with finished pieces or projects.

This year I plan to:
- try out supplies that I have always been curious about
- delve deeper into a technique that I have not fully explored
- take classes to play with art
-doodle, paint, stitch, knit, yo yo, print and create my heart out in whatever direction it leads me!

My only criteria is that I spend a minimum of a few hours each week on a technique that is different from week to week.

The very reason that I love art journaling is the exact same reason that I had no interest in doing it in the first place. I thought, if you can't hang it or wear it, what was the point of it? With limited time to make art, I thought doing something so frivolous as creating art that no one would see was a waste of time. It's not that I never "played" in the art studio but usually in the back of my mind I knew that some day the piece I was playing with could be over-dyed, collaged, or used as a background for my "real" art.

A few years ago, my perspective changed when I met Colleen Attara. I bought myself a birthday gift of an art retreat which turned out to be a life changing experience for me in many ways. I wrote a blog post on it here. One of the most amazing experiences was taking Colleen's class. Through her stories of how this form of art transformed her life and how it helped her deal with difficult experiences, I could see how it could help my own life. As I spent the day playing with transfers, paints, inks, ephemera, typewriters and sewing machines I got lost in the process of play. I was completely free to make mistakes and create without fear which was exactly what i needed.

Last month for my mom's birthday, I took her to Colleen's cottage art studio in Yardley PA. I wanted to share with her what had been so important for me. Spending the day with my mom and watching her learn new techniques along side of me was a gift. The day could not have been more perfect and one that I will always treasure.

January is always a creative time for me. On most nights I can be found hibernating in my studio. There is always a stash of unfinished projects, a few lit candles, sometimes a cat or two and the quiet hum of the heat fan. After the hustle of the Christmas rush, I want nothing more than to be alone and quiet with my stitching.

After learning to knit two years ago from my dear friend Laura, I have found it to be a huge source of relaxation. I love the tiny clicking of my needles as I make each stitch and the comforting feeling of the yarn in my fingers.

More recently, I participated in a class with my friend Margaret where she taught the art of mending, Sashiko. I have always enjoyed this process and even wrote an earlier blog post about the meditative act of mending (see blog post here) However in this class, I got to see how the other students also had a similar response. During the class, the room went from chatty to quiet as people worked on their sashiko stitches. The rhythm of the running stitch has a way of slowing down your breath and relaxing tense muscles.

The more I allow myself the time that I need to engage in the meditative craft of stitching, the more I see its emotional benefits to a healthy well-being. I feel strongly that everyone can benefit by spending some time in a meditative craft whether it be doodling, coloring in a coloring book, painting, or a needle craft. You don't need to be good at it- you just need to do it. Over time, not only will you find your skills getting better but you will be surprised to find how much more fulfilled your life will become.Whitneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10359979154558017101noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683542432320817648.post-10968151253539329362018-07-17T17:43:00.003-07:002018-07-17T18:14:36.815-07:00Enough- Pinky SwearGrowing up, I was never the best student. But I really wanted a phone in my room. These days middle schoolers walk around with cell phones but when I was growing up the goal was to have a phone of my own in my bedroom. I made a wager with my parents that if I got on the honor roll for all four semesters, they would allow me to have a phone at the end of the year. Knowing that I had never even come close to the honor roll, they thought it was a safe bet. Not only did I get a phone, I got one after just a single semester because the girl who had never even gotten honor roll got Distinguished Honor Roll.

I work well with goals. Being a type A personality has helped me achieve many of my dreams and often has led me to success. I enjoy pushing myself hard, learning new things and trying to be better. But what happens when you're always searching and striving for more? When you feel that you can never be satisfied with where you are right now?

Enough. That's right- enough of the promises to be better, enough of the podcasts on doing more, enough of the books that make it all seem easy. Enough. Because right now, we are enough. Each of us are where we are supposed to be at this very moment. Thich Nhat Hahn tells the story of The Three Questions by Leo Tolstoy. The basic moral of the story is that the most important time is now. The most important person is the one you are currently with and the most important thing you should be doing is what you are doing now. My natural instinct is to always push for more and while I can keep working hard towards a goal, I need to remember that the most important time is now.

When my second and last dog Jasper passed away nearly three years ago, I was devastated. Anyone who has lost a pet can understand the huge emptiness that I was feeling. Although I could not find the words to express the loss, I remember taking a picture of his empty toy basket. That visual echoed the words that I could not find.

As I do, I tried to heal myself with art. It was working....but it wasn't. Struggling with the piece, I wanted so badly to express what I was feeling through stitch but nothing seemed to work. I put it aside for quite some time. Last year I kept busy with my 52 Collage Project and the basket piece sat...waiting. Recently I came back to it. I really just felt the need to finish it, to put it behind me and to move on. Even though I am still not completely satisfied with it, I was having a hard time starting anything new until that piece was complete.

The basket is once again filled with toys. Rather than chew toys and bones, it has been replaced by little balls with bells and catnip mice. Although the basket is not as full as it once was, I find comfort whenever I see one of our new furry family members fish out a toy from the basket that once held Jasper's prized stuffed animals.
While writing my 2018 goals, I found some old notes and goals that I wrote before beginning on the 52 for 2017.

"purpose: have a goal, strengthen composition skills, strengthen confidence in decision making, create a cohesive body of work, show all 52 in 2018"

There were several keys to making a project like this work. The first was accountability. If you have a goal, declare it loud and clear! I wrote about it in my blog and made a habit of regularly posting it on Instagram with pictures from each week. As people began to take notice, my accountability grew. During more difficult weeks, I kept going...there was no way I wanted to let myself down and with people watching and expecting a piece a week (or at least in my own mind they were), I had to pull through. Another major factor was forcing myself to go into the studio even when I was tired or uninspired. I found that just being in there surrounded by fabrics and papers eventually led to a shot of inspiration.

So did I achieve my purpose? Midway through the project, I was getting much more efficient in my pieces. There were some that were more labor intensive but the general idea and overall plan came together more quickly. In the past I would agonize over every little decision which would ultimately cause a paralyzed creativity block. Now there was no time for that. I learned to follow my gut and just do it. I began to trust that once I made a decision, I could choose my next move based on the result rather than double or triple think each move. I grew confident in my compositions and my decision making. My final goal was to show all 52 in 2018. Currently I have three shows lined up! Writing out your goals, declaring them out loud, and doing the work leads to positive outcomes.

When the 52 came to a close, I gave a lot of thought to a new project for 2018 but decided to give myself the year to dive in and explore the lessons learned from the 52. There were subjects and areas that I touched on that I want to go back to and work through on a large scale. Since each piece was worked in only one week, there were times when I felt like I wanted to do more with a technique or carry through on an idea but there was not enough time.

The ultimate lesson learned was the importance of practice. I know that I am a better artist after this year. I know that if you put in the time and effort of doing something nearly daily, you will get better. It's a freeing concept really...this can apply to anything. There is nothing you can not do.
I can't believe the year has gone by so quickly. When I started I was afraid I would not be able to complete it. Almost every week I have that same fear creep up. But one thing about me is that I am a woman of my word. I try to be truthful and authentic in everything I do. I think things over before I make a commitment because if I say I am going to do it, I do. This is why, I have thought long and hard about 2018. Even though I will have reached my goal, I feel somewhat like I am giving up by not continuing with a new 52. However, I also know that I learned so much from doing this weekly practice and it is time to move on. It is time to take the skills I have learned and apply them. I will be sad to post the final #52 but I am also feeling the excitement of new adventures!
It is getting harder to get done on time. I am not sure if it's the fact that I am in my busy work season or if it is because I am feeling more confident in my ability to create my collage more quickly due to more decisiveness. Another factor that has been affecting my collage productivity is my new found love of knitting. My friend Laura taught me how to knit this year and it has been sometimes pulling me away from my stitched collage work. In the end, I believe all creative endeavors benefit one another. It all works together and each new skill opens up ideas that can cross over various art mediums.
It is getting harder and harder to find the time to do the collages. Interestingly, I believe that some of my most effective pieces have not been the ones that have taken the most time. It has me thinking about something Elizabeth Gilbert discussed in her Ted Talk, "Your Elusive Creative Genius". According to ancient Greek beliefs, genius is something you have rather than something you are. It is described as something like a spirit who comes out to visit and it is up to the individual to grab onto it and run with it. I can only imagine the Greek were describing 'flow'. It is in those instances where a collage comes about so easily and all time stands still. In this set of 4 pieces, 3 out of the 4 came about easily. The one consisted of struggle. In the past, a struggle would happen more often than not. This is another positive result of a weekly or daily art practice; just being there to receive the gift from the spirit.
I have learned that with each week comes an idea, the start of the projectand then the fear of the piece not working out. In the past, I let that fear sit with me. Sometimes it sat with me a week, more often it sat with me a month or longer before I was able to jump back in and begin. With a weekly challenge, I do not have that luxury. I have to push through and make decisions. I have to try something and make it work. It has led me to feel a sense of comfort that I can make it work. Sometimes the result is more successful than others but in the end, the challenge was met and usually I am happy with the end piece. Below are the results from weeks 33-36.
